Projects 2024
We encourage members to try different kinds of photography and to regularly exercise their skills. One way we do that is to set monthly project themes and invite members to submit photos on each theme. This helps to build confidence, broaden composition techniques and develop creativity.

Members vote online for the submitted photos without knowing who the photographers are. The top three winners are awarded a certificate. The results of the vote are shared with members. If a member wishes to have personal feedback about their photos, the committee will do so on request.
At the end of the year, members vote again for the 12 first-place winners to award the Chairman’s Cup for the best photo of the year.

The photographic projects for 2024 are:
January: Festive
February: Weather
There's a saying that there is no bad weather.... only the wrong type of clothing. Let's add to that..... and protection for your camera!! Get out and about, good weather and bad. Bright light or dark and gloomy. Look for clouds, wind, rain, ice, snow.... add contrast for drama and you have the makings of a great photo. View gallery March: Wildlife
March is a good month to capture bird migrations in the UK. However, don't feel limited..... look for any forms of wildlife as the animals search for food and shelter in these cold months. View gallery April: View through a window
It's all in the title. Try to look for the unusual, rather than the everyday to create a narrative. Submission date: 21 April May: Landscape
Generally, the most challenging aspect of landscape photography is to find a good enough foreground that syncs with the mid-ground and a non-boring background. Get out in the fresh air, stretch the legs and take your camera for a stroll. Berkshire has some beautiful landscapes to photograph if you cannot travel far.... Submission date: 26 May June: Flowers
A single bloom, a bunch, or more... the flowers should be in bloom all around us. Submission date: 23 June |
July: Colour
Whilst the project of flowers last month could also count for the project this month, you don't have to limit yourself to nature.... colour can be found everywhere from architecture and objects, on surfaces and textures, on butterfly wings and blades of grass. Submission date: 28 July August: Reflections
Reflections are all about balance and symmetry in the frame. Reflections from mirrored or polished surfaces can be very effective at capturing other details, people or objects. Change your position to get the composition right. Water reflections are best carried out when there is minimal wind. Smaller bodies of water generally have fewer ripples and therefore better reflections. Submission date: 25 August September: Black & White
In the photographic world, black and white is an art form of its own. Arguably working in black and white can help you become a better photographer. How? It’s all about seeing. Colour is very powerful but it tends to dominate photos. Beginners can struggle to see other key elements like contrast, texture, shape, form, and quality of light. Black and white strips away colour, allowing you to focus on the other elements that matter. Submission date: 22 September October: water (Rain, Sea, Rivers)
Try to capture water on the move. Use the shutter speed to make the water appear in different ways. Fast shutter speeds for droplets, slow shutter speeds for milky white. Submission date: 27 October November: Autumn
Nature puts on a spectacular colour show in the Autumn months.... windy days blow leaves around, people start to wrap up against the weather. Submission date: 24 November December: Macro
Up close and personal with your favourite objects. A topic you can do on a table top inbetween dashing around getting ready for Christmas. Submission date: 5 January 2025 January '25: Winter
Try to capture what mother nature throws at us over the holidays and into the New Year. Submission date: 26 January 2025 |
