Field Trip: Solar Eclipse
A trip up onto The Ridgeway near Compton to view and photograph the partial solar eclipse. The eclipse begins at approximately 6.17 pm and ends shortly after 8.00 pm.
Visitors are most welcome to join us for a fee of £5, payable on arrival. Please email: events@thatchamphotoclub.com to let us know you are coming along so we can welcome you.
Meeting Place
Venue: The Ridgeway, Churn Road, RG20 6PP
Directions: Turn into Churn Road in Compton and drive for approx 1m. The road becomes a track but still well made. Parking is available on the left at the junction with the Ridgeway.
Time: Please arrive in good time (by 6:00pm) so that you are set up before first contact.

Suggested Equipment
- Camera
- Tripod
- Telephoto lens (I’ll be using a 100 to 500mm)
- Remote release or self timer
- A solar filter designed specifically for solar photography
- Spare battery and memory card
Safety
This is a partial eclipse. At no point during the event is it safe to look directly at the Sun.
Please remember:
- Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye.
- Never look through the optical viewfinder of a DSLR when the camera is pointed at the Sun.
- Mirrorless cameras avoid the risk of looking through an optical viewfinder, but the camera sensor can still be damaged by prolonged exposure to the Sun. A solar filter should be fitted before pointing the camera at the Sun and remain in place until the camera is pointing away again.
- A standard neutral density filter is not suitable. Use a filter specifically designed for solar photography.
